A grounding technique to bring you back to the present moment when anxiety, panic, or overwhelm sets in.
The 333 Rule works by redirecting your attention from racing thoughts and internal panic toward the present, physical environment. From a CBT perspective, it activates three key mechanisms:
Shifts attention away from anxious thoughts toward the external world around you.
Activates the prefrontal cortex (rational brain) and calms the amygdala (the brain's fear centre).
Offers an immediate, actionable way to interrupt the spiral of anxious thoughts before they escalate.
Take one slow breath if you can.
You do not need to change your breathing. Just notice it.
Place your feet on the floor if possible. Notice the weight of your body being supported.
Look around and name three objects you can see right now — a pen, a chair, a cloud.
Listen carefully and name three distinct sounds — traffic, a clock ticking, your own breath.
Consciously move three parts of your body — roll your shoulders, wiggle your toes, turn your head.
